Google's release notes for 14 October 2026 include a change that Philips Hue owners will notice: existing Hue bridges linked to Google Home are upgraded in the background to local Matter control through Google Home hubs. Google promises faster responses and better reliability, and you do not have to re-pair anything.

What changes for Hue

Until now, a Hue bridge linked to Google Home did not get this local Matter path. After the upgrade, a Google Home hub on the same network controls the bridge over Matter. The same release adds a broader line saying that if you have compatible Matter devices and a compatible Matter hub, you get faster, more reliable control "closer to the feel of flipping a physical switch".

Google does not say in the notes which hubs count, how long the rollout will take, or whether every bridge model qualifies. The switch happens automatically in the background, so there is nothing to turn on.

The rest of the update

The app also gets rebuilt controls for third-party lights, plugs and switches, which Google says feel more tactile and responsive. On the full-screen controller page for lights, plugs, switches, fans and air purifiers you can now swipe up for a quick settings panel with favourites, device history, help articles, feedback and full settings. Drag-and-drop in the Favorites view no longer misbehaves, and a banner now appears when a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm clears, with the event and its time.

Camera fixes cover live view tiles stuck on an old snapshot on iOS, a progress bar that could hang on a spinner while scrubbing a paused event on Android, and playback errors on still-image snapshot events, also on Android.

Gemini for Home, still in early access, gets five fixes. A polite "thank you" now ends a conversation with a short goodbye, while a direct command to stop talking closes the microphone at once. Weather answers follow the home-wide Fahrenheit or Celsius setting, answers on smart displays scroll at the pace of the speech, and "stop" no longer gets mistaken for ending the conversation when you want to stop media, a timer or an alarm. Requests for relaxing or spa music now play music instead of white noise.

Why it matters

Local control means fewer steps between a voice command and the bulb, and Google ties it directly to faster responses. Moving existing bridges to Matter without making anyone re-pair their lights is the kind of quiet change that makes Matter useful in practice.
