Shelly pushed Wall Display firmware 2.8.0 to the stable channel on 11 October 2026. Modern panels become both a Matter controller and a Matter accessory. You commission third-party Matter devices on the display, put them on the same home screen as Shelly tiles, and you can also add the panel itself to Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings, Home Assistant or another Matter system. The update is free and over the air.

Controller and accessory on the same hardware

As a controller, the Wall Display takes a Matter setup code and commissions lights, covers, thermostats, fans, vacuums, sensors and other supported device types. If the accessory is already on Wi-Fi, you add it straight away. If not, the panel can put it on the network over Bluetooth. Commissioned devices land as ordinary tiles: dim, colour, cover position, thermostat setpoint, occupancy, air quality. Scripts see them as Shelly components (switch:0, light:0, cover:0, and so on), so automations use the same shape as for native Shelly hardware. Changes are pushed, not polled.

As an accessory, the panel exposes its relay outputs as switches, a dimmer supply as a dimmable light, a paired Shelly Blu H&T as temperature and humidity, the built-in presence sensor as occupancy, and the room thermostat as a thermostat when that feature is on. Multi-admin works both ways: a device commissioned on the display can be shared into another ecosystem with a fresh three-minute pairing code, and the panel itself can sit in several Matter systems at once.

Sharing across panels, Thread caveat, and HA

Matter devices commissioned on one modern Wall Display can be shared with other Wall Displays in the same home through an eight-digit code valid for three minutes. Older first-generation Wall Display and Wall Display X2 units cannot commission Matter themselves, but they can use devices shared from a newer panel. Thread devices still need their own Thread border router; you commission them into the Wall Display with the Matter code that hub provides.

Shelly also fixed slow, error-spamming Home Assistant dashboards on modern Wall Displays in this release. Circuit-breaker tiles for Shelly Pro CB models, Matter bridge offline bugs with large hubs such as Philips Hue, and a long list of tile and cloud reconnect fixes ride along. Matter app and cloud control for Premium subscribers was described as following later; Matter devices are not exposed over MQTT at all.

If you already run a Wall Display as the hallway panel, 2.8.0 is the firmware that turns it into a local Matter hub without another box on the shelf. Prefer waiting a few days on a production wall if you rely on custom scripts; the changelog is large, and Shelly has already bumped the live channel past 2.8.0 with small follow-up builds.
