tado° is rolling out a set of app updates for its heating system over the coming weeks. The Munich company announced them on 22 October 2026. The two most interesting ones, smarter open window detection and a mould risk index, are only for tado° X owners who pay for AI Assist.
Open window detection that learns each room
tado° X already pauses heating when it sees a sudden change in room conditions, such as a sharp drop in humidity, that suggests a window has been opened. Until now it used the same sensitivity in every room. The new algorithm learns how each room normally behaves, so a bathroom after a shower, a kitchen while cooking and a bedroom at night are no longer judged by the same yardstick. tado° says this makes detection more precise and reliable.
The app will also show whether open window detection is still learning a room or has finished and is optimised.
Mould index for each room
The second new feature appears under Air Comfort. Instead of looking at a single humidity reading, tado° tracks how temperature and humidity change over time and uses the VTT growth model, a building physics model developed in Finland, to estimate how favourable the conditions are for mould. Each room is rated Low, Elevated or High.
The index needs a temperature and humidity measurement in every room you want to monitor, which means a tado° Smart Radiator Thermostat or Smart Thermostat in that room. The idea is to give a warning early enough to ventilate or heat more before mould becomes visible.
Free changes
- Customisable home screen. Tiles in the app can be reordered or hidden and restored later. It is already available to all tado° customers.
- Boost in Apple Live Activities. tado° X users will see an active heating boost in the Dynamic Island and on the iPhone lock screen, as well as on the Apple Watch and Mac. A shortcut returns heating to the normal schedule without opening the app. This one is free for all tado° X owners.
The price
AI-powered open window detection and the mould index are part of AI Assist, which costs €3.99 a month or €29.99 a year. The subscription also includes automatic geofencing, holiday mode, preheating before arrival and adaptive heating. Owners of older tado° V3+ devices are not mentioned, and none of these features is promised to them.
For people who keep their heating in Home Assistant, it is a reminder that tado° is putting more of its logic in the cloud and behind a subscription. A mould index based on temperature and humidity can also be built locally from your own sensors, though without the VTT model.
