GE Lighting, which belongs to Savant, announced on 20 October 2026 that its battery-powered smart shades can now be ordered in custom sizes, with more fabrics and a second roll direction. The custom shades start at $299.99 and are sold only through shop.gelighting.com and Amazon.com. Other retailers keep selling the pre-sized versions. When we checked on 21 October, the store page for the 3% light filtering version showed a final price of $259.99.

Sizes and fabrics

Until now the shades came in a set of standard sizes. Made-to-order versions range from 28 to 72 inches wide and from 35 to 110 inches tall, which HomeKit News converts to roughly 71-183 cm and 89-279 cm. They can be mounted inside or outside the window opening. GE asks for up to three weeks before a custom shade ships, plus shipping time, and custom orders cannot be returned, so the measuring guide on the store is worth reading first.

The standard Blackout and Translucent fabrics are joined by a 3% solar fabric, listed in GE's store as "3% Light Filtering", plus designer Light Filtering and Blackout ranges. The store describes the 3% fabric as one that diffuses light and still lets you see out when the shade is closed. Every fabric comes in an aluminium frame in black or white.

The reverse roll option is for windows with handles in the way. In the regular configuration the fabric runs close to the glass. With reverse roll it moves up and down further from the window, so it clears the hardware.

Battery and Matter

The rest is unchanged. GE says installation takes under 10 minutes, the built-in battery lasts up to six months per charge and is charged through a magnetic USB charger, and a remote is included. The product page lists a two-year warranty and says the shades are assembled in the USA.

The shades connect over Matter over Thread. The announcement names Google, Alexa and Apple Home, and the product page adds SmartThings. Whatever the platform, you need a Thread border router. Home Assistant is not on GE's list, but as a standard Matter device the shade should be addable through the Matter integration with a Thread border router. GE has not confirmed that.

Availability

For buyers in Europe, the catch is the sales channel: the custom shades are sold only through the US store and Amazon.com, and sizes and prices are given in inches and dollars. The announcement says nothing about other markets.
