Home Assistant is getting an HP Printer integration that reads HP printers straight over the local network, without an HP account or cloud service. Its author, chemelli74, merged pull request #184161 into the development branch on 19 October 2026 at 23:40 Polish time, 16 days after opening it. The documentation draft (home-assistant.io #48781, still open) lists the integration for Home Assistant 2026.11, due in early November.
Which printers work
The integration talks to the printer's built-in web server, the page that opens when you type the printer's IP address into a browser. The documentation suggests a quick test: open http://<printer IP address>/DevMgmt/ProductStatusDyn.xml. If the browser shows an XML document, the printer should work.
Three models are confirmed so far: HP Color LaserJet M255dw, HP ENVY Photo 7830 All-in-One and HP OfficeJet Pro 9022e. Three groups are out:
- printers connected only over USB;
- printers whose web server answers only over HTTPS, because the integration uses plain HTTP on port 80;
- printers that do not report a serial number.
Setup asks for a single field, the IP address or host name. The documentation recommends a fixed address reserved in the router, because if the address changes you have to remove the integration and add it again. The serial number is also checked on every update, so if the address suddenly points at a different printer, the integration reports an error instead of mixing up the data.
What you get
Each printer becomes a device. Which sensors appear depends on the model, so a printer without a scanner or fax gets no scanner or fax sensors.
- Status: printing, scanning, copying, ready, power save, off, canceling job and paper tray empty. Any other state shows as unknown.
- Level of each cartridge in percent: cyan, magenta, yellow, black, and tri-color for combined colour cartridges.
- Pages remaining per cartridge, only if the printer reports that estimate. The documentation warns that many inkjets don't.
- Page counters: total printed, black and white, colour, scanned, copied and faxed, plus single-sided and double-sided sheets, which are disabled by default.
- Diagnostic counters for paper jams and pickup failures, for both the printer and the document feeder. Some of them are disabled by default too.
The integration polls the printer once a minute. When the printer is off, its entities become unavailable and come back on the next update after it wakes up.
The documentation shows two ready-made automations: a phone notification when the black cartridge drops below 10%, and another when the status changes to an empty paper tray.
Limits
The integration is read-only. It does not manage print jobs, change settings or show printheads as consumables. It starts at the Bronze level of the quality scale and depends on the aiohpprinter library by the same author.
