A Shelly device running firmware that Home Assistant no longer supports has so far been a dead end. Setup failed with ConfigEntryNotReady, Home Assistant kept retrying, and the device could not be updated from Home Assistant, because the update entity never loaded either. Pull request #188381 by Shay Levy (thecode), merged into the development branch on 25 October 2026 and headed for Home Assistant 2026.11, changes that.

What happens now

When Home Assistant finds unsupported firmware, the device still loads, but only with the update platform. No switches, sensors or other entities appear yet. At the same time a fixable issue shows up in the repairs list, titled "Unsupported firmware for device" followed by the device name. Its text says that only the firmware update entity is available until the firmware is updated. Selecting Submit starts an OTA update to the latest stable firmware version.

Once the device is running supported firmware, the integration reloads by itself with all platforms, and the usual entities come back.

If the update cannot be started, the repair flow ends with a message that no update is available or that the device cannot be reached. The existing issue text adds that if a device does not offer an update, you should check its internet connection (gateway, DNS, time) and restart it.

Older and newer generations

The pull request handles both families of Shelly devices. On first-generation devices, which use the older block API, Home Assistant detects unsupported firmware through REST polling, and CoAP polling stops for such a device. On RPC devices, meaning Gen2 and newer, detection happens when the device reconnects.

The author tested the change on a Shelly 1PM with firmware 20191219-114622, old enough not to have CoAP at all, and on a Shelly Plus Plug S running 0.13.0-beta1.

Who benefits

This mainly helps with devices that sat in a drawer for a few years, or ones that were never updated after installation. Until now the fix was to open the device's own web interface or the Shelly app, update the firmware there, and only then return to Home Assistant. In 2026.11 the whole thing can be done from the repairs list.
