M5Stack launched the ToughC5 on 10 October 2026, a rugged outdoor IoT controller built on Espressif's ESP32-C5. CNX Software priced it at $49.90 on AliExpress and the official M5Stack store. It replaces the 2021 ESP32-based TOUGH with dual-band Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5 LE and IEEE 802.15.4 for Zigbee and Thread, plus a brighter power and expansion story for field installs.
What is inside
The SoC is an ESP32-C5HR8: a single-core RISC-V CPU up to 240 MHz, 16 MB flash and 8 MB Octal PSRAM. The front is a 2.0-inch IPS capacitive touch panel at 320 × 240, driven by an ILI9342C with up to about 853 nits. Inside the sealed housing sit a passive buzzer, a microSD slot, an RX8130CE RTC with a CR2032 backup cell, and four HY2.0-4P ports for RS485, I2C, GPIO and UART that can be routed out through M12 cable glands. Power options are USB-C at 5 V, 6-24 V DC through the RS485 input, or a 3.7 V battery connector. M5Stack quotes about 320 mA at 4.2 V under full load and about 10.4 µA in shutdown. The UV-resistant PC+ABS shell measures 75.9 × 58.0 × 42.5 mm and weighs 119 g. Magnetic mounting is supported.
M5Stack calls the enclosure weatherproof with "basic water and dust resistance" but does not publish an IP rating and says it is not designed for immersion. CNX commenters flagged that gap; if you need a true outdoor seal, plan your own protection rather than trusting the marketing word.
Software
Arduino support lands through M5Unified and M5GFX, with a quick-start guide on the M5 docs site. UiFlow2 Blockly firmware is listed as in progress via M5Burner. As with most M5Stack kits, ESPHome is not part of the launch story; expect to write Arduino or ESP-IDF code, or wait for community ESPHome configs if someone ports the board.
The kit ships with a 1 m USB-C cable, Allen keys, terminal cables and a waterproof O-ring. Typical targets are outdoor edge data collection, industrial field control and smart-building gateways that need RS485 and a readable touch UI in one box.
