Wyze launched the Solar Cam on 20 October 2026 as part of its "Wyze Week" announcements. It is a fixed outdoor camera with a 2K sensor, a 5,200 mAh battery and a 1.77 W solar panel in the box, sold in the US for $69.98. The same camera without the panel, which Wyze's forum announcement presents as the Wyze Battery Cam, costs $10 less. Both are also listed in Canada.
The specification
The camera records at 2304 x 1296 with a 130-degree field of view, colour night vision and a built-in spotlight of about 100 lumens. Wyze lists AI person detection and two-way audio. Video can be stored locally on an optional microSD card, and the housing is rated IP65.
Wyze's main claim concerns power: one hour of direct sunlight a day should keep the battery charged. The panel can be detached and mounted up to about 3 metres (10 feet) away from the camera, which helps when the best viewing spot is in the shade. The Verge notes that it is $10 cheaper than Wyze's own Solar Cam Pan 2K, which adds motorised pan and tilt.
Not a new idea, and owners noticed
9to5Google points out that Wyze sold a solar pan camera with the same one-hour promise a year earlier and that other brands offer similar kits. Several regulars on the Wyze forum called the Solar Cam a 2K Battery Cam Pro with a panel included, and questioned the marketing line about "no monthly trips up a ladder", since a frozen camera still needs a physical reset.
The more practical question was the battery. Wyze's post says the cameras let owners "spend less time swapping batteries", but a forum member who already had a unit reported that the 5,200 mAh pack is fully enclosed and not designed to be swapped, unlike the Battery Cam Pro. When the cell wears out, the camera can still run from a cable. Wyze has not published a cycle rating.
For local-control setups
None of the sources mention an RTSP stream, Matter support or a local API, so the Wyze app is the only documented way to view and manage the camera. For Home Assistant users, local microSD recording is not the same as a local live stream. Anyone who wants the camera in a self-hosted video system should check that before buying.
