Battery-free Zigbee Green Power switches moved one step closer to Home Assistant on 27 October 2026. Change #868 by puddly was merged into zigpy/zha, the Python library behind Home Assistant's ZHA integration. It is the ZHA side of the Green Power runtime that zigpy shipped in version 2.4.0 last week. No ZHA release contains it yet; the latest one is still 2.3.1 from 9 October.
What the change does
The change is the counterpart of zigpy #1874, merged on 29 September. That one split zigpy's single device model into regular Zigbee devices and Green Power devices. A Green Power device gets a network address derived the way the specification describes, plus a synthetic IEEE address, which the specification does not define at all.
ZHA now handles that second kind of device. Two details matter:
- Green Power devices do not take part in automatic entity discovery. According to the change, no known device sends capability information that would be useful for it.
- In its place, ZHA gets a basic quirk matching system for Green Power devices. A quirk tells ZHA what a given device is and which entities to create for it.
The author tested it on EZSP versions 9, 13 and 19, which is the protocol of Silicon Labs coordinators running EmberZNet firmware.
The missing piece: quirks
Without a quirk, ZHA creates no entities for a Green Power device, so the quirks decide what users actually see. They live in a separate change, zha-device-handlers #5273, opened on 22 August and still open. It adds a quirk builder for Green Power devices and the first two quirks: the EnOcean PTM 216Z four-button rocker module and the Philips Hue Tap.
The author notes that practically all Green Power devices are going to be remotes. These quirks therefore create event entities through the ZHA entity API and keep a small amount of state for each button. The same change also depends on further zigpy work on Green Power management that is still in progress.
Where the roadmap stands
The project is tracked in Open Home Foundation roadmap issue #195, "Implement Green Power (ZGP) support". It is split into four stages: the parsing core in zigpy, the runtime with database storage, packet forwarding from EZSP coordinators in bellows, and the ZHA side, which the roadmap describes with a commissioning window in the user interface.
The first two stages reached zigpy 2.4.0. Forwarding landed in bellows 1.2.0, released on 23 October with change #767, "ZGP packet forwarding". With #868 merged, work on the fourth stage has started in the library. The change itself does not mention a pairing screen in Home Assistant.
What owners can do now
Nothing needs to be installed yet. Green Power switches paired to a Hue bridge can stay there for now. Once a ZHA release with this code reaches Home Assistant and the quirks are merged, a Hue Tap or an EnOcean rocker should show up in ZHA as event entities, the same way other buttons do.
